Grocer Tops Corporate Reputation Ranking

February 09, 2015

A grocery store chain debuts to take the top spot in Harris Poll’s latest Reputation Quotient study, beating out firms like Amazon, Johnson & Johnson and Apple. The study measures the reputations of the Top 100 most visible companies, based on US general public perception.

Wegman’s, a regional grocery chain in the Northeast, was the only company ranked in the top five in all six reputation dimensions, namely: social responsibility, emotional appeal, products and services, vision and leadership, financial performance, and workplace environment. Samsung, which ranked six places ahead of Apple this year, was strong in four of the six dimensions. More than half of the top 10 firms in 2014 were displaced in 2015 (Coca-cola, Disney, Honda, Whole Foods, Microsoft, and Sony).

The 2015 top ten based on general public rankings is as follows:

  1. Wegmans Food Markets
  2. Amazon.com
  3. Samsung
  4. Costco
  5. Johnson & Johnson
  6. Kraft
  7. L.L. Bean
  8. Publix Supermarkets
  9. Apple
  10. Google

The report notes that “Americans remain skeptical of Corporate America, with only one-in-five indicating the reputation of Corporate America has improved while twice as many indicate it has declined. Consumers are doing their homework — with this skepticism comes proactive research about companies as over half of the public investigates corporate behavior before buying and one third decided not to business with a company because of something they learned about how the company conducts itself. Further, one-third participated in a conversation with others about how a company conducts itself. This is the new norm.”
