Different Environmental Advertising Appeals Resonate with Young Men vs. Women

Previous research shows men under 30 care the least about the environment and taking steps to protect it, and are averse to traditionally feminine behaviors, which environmental appeals usually angle toward. A new study compares young men and women’s responses to a “take care of your planet” messages perceived as feminine, with other appeals emphasizing physical activity or “sweating” for the environment, seen as more masculine. Although “caring” is less effective, a gender-neutral-themed message resonates more broadly.

1) The rebroadcast of the “Courageous Career Moments: Overcome Fears and Bet on Yourself” recording originally held as an in-person breakfast at AUDIENCExSCIENCE. The panel included Aarti Bhaskaran, Global Lead, Ad Research & Insights, Snap Inc., LaToya Christian, Managing Partner, GroupM, Colleen Funkey, VP, Consumer Insights, The Estée Lauder Companies, Renata Policicio, SVP, Research, Direct to Consumer and Streaming, Warner Bros. Discovery and was moderated by Mary Ann Packo, Senior Partner, Hypothesis Group.

Scott welcomed Radha to their virtual fireside chat on the subject of representation in media and the workplace. Scott recalled that at ARF AUDIENCExSCIENCE Conference in 2020, CBS outlined its steps to improve diversity and inclusiveness as both a moral and a business imperative. He asked Radha about CBS’s current thinking.

Inclusive Content is Good for Business

Investing in inclusive content and advertising is essential to connect with customers in demonstrating brand commitment to the causes they care about, according to Nielsen’s Charlene Polite Corley. With Nielsen research supporting how critical representation is to the future of media and brands, Charlene focused on women’s lack of representation to exemplify the missed opportunity in excluding more than half the U.S. population from advertising and content. Nielsen’s findings indicated slow progress in advancements and advertisers were urged to drive inclusion at every step of the production chain, both on screen and behind the camera, and use their media influence to demand more representative programming.

Overcoming the Diversity Gap in Mobile Gaming

The gaming team at Meta launched an initiative to better understand the perspectives of underrepresented gamers in order to share the importance of diversity with the mobile gaming industry. Their findings, Stephen Gray (Meta) pointed out, are just as applicable to advertisers outside the gaming industry. With gaming now, the world’s most dominant form of entertainment, Chloé Gingrich (Meta) noted that the gamers population is more diverse than ever before, encompassing a spectrum of ethnicities, genders, ages, sexual orientations and abilities.
