Helen Katz (Publicis Media) moderated this track discussion for Television Disrupted. She asked the speakers about practical, actionable takeaways for TV advertisers as well as emerging trends and opportunities.

The Evolving TV Streamer

How do viewers feel about advertising on streaming services and how can it be improved? Research by Conviva and Dynata addressed these questions which are becoming more and more important to the industry given the strong increases in viewing of ad-supported streaming services. The study data were obtained through a February 2021 survey by Dynata and Conviva’s proprietary Stream Sensor™ technology. The analysis focused on identifying the key drivers of viewer satisfaction.

Surprise! Consumers Like Ads that Mock Them

Will an ad that makes fun of the very consumers it targets offend or appeal to them? So-called “audience-targeted negative advertisements” (ATNAs) are the subject of new research that examines ATNAs through the lens of empathy. It also tests their effectiveness for promoting low- and high-status products.

Here’s What we Know About Retailing in Times of Inflation

Consumers and retailers both face challenges in times of economic inflation. Whereas the Covid pandemic has plunged us into unprecedented times, previous research suggests that when prices rise, consumers tend to expect inflation to be high and persistent. They also tend to overestimate sellers’ profits and underestimate the effect inflation has on the seller. Some companies are equipped to weather such price increases. However, the long-term impact of the perception of “greedflation” is yet to be quantified.

This is When Diversity in TV Ads Drives Purchase Intent

Promoting diversity through creative content is the right thing to do and can be highly beneficial for brands if done correctly. It’s important for the context to be in sync with the changing context of public opinion. The study featured in this latest MSI white paper, found that Black actors’ share of ads can increase purchase intent, but only when the ads were processed peripherally. If the ad’s aim was to increase the public’s attention to inequality, this could actually inhibit the effect.

Leading with Inclusive Insights

On November 1, 2022, the ARF Cultural Effectiveness Council hosted a discussion on ways that brands have gained an edge by focusing their insights and subsequent marketing on traditionally under-represented communities.  Speakers from General Mills, Vevo, and muliti-cultural agency Alma shed light on the kinds of research they find helpful in uncovering valuable inclusive insights and the potential rewards of this strategy.  They cited examples of those insights and discussed the societal trends that underlie them. The session was moderated by Council Co-Chair Janelle James of Ipsos.

Ad-Spend Cues, Deepfakes/A.I., Badass Endorsers and Influencer KPIs

At this Insights Studio, authors from three different continents showcase their recently published work—including the JAR Best Paper 2022 on how advertising expenditures drive consumers’ perceptions of ad and brand quality. Also featured are studies on deepfakes and AI reshaping the advertising industry, the success of using product endorsers who are actors known for roles portraying despicable characters, and KPI patterns of social media influencers across several platforms. Talking points in the concluding Q&A span the future of AI in advertising and influencer marketing, machine-driven decisions for choosing endorsers, and factors (product- and economic-related) affecting consumer perceptions of quality in TV ads and engagement in user-generated content.
