Ready or Not, Generative AI Is Here to Stay
In addition to summarizing this issue’s articles, Editor-in-Chief Colin Campbell announces a new call for papers on generative artificial intelligence. “There’s great potential for efficiency and value” in this area, Campbell writes. That’s not to diminish concerns over ethics and the potential for abuse. “Such concerns are valid to keep technological advance in check. And, like for earlier innovations from the printing press to the digital age, generative AI will require adaption and learning on our part to minimize its downsides.” The editorial concludes with tributes to two earlier JAR stewards: William (Bill) Cook, who led JAR during the 1980s and ‘90s and passed away at age 80 in May, and Douglas C. West, who was handed the European Advertising Academy’s lifetime achievement award in June. West was JAR’s executive editor from 2008 to 2014.
