A set of response options to a question in a research study which can be ranked from highest to lowest, but for which the distances between the response options cannot be quantified. For example, an “excellent” to “poor” scale can be considered ordinal, because the distance between “excellent” and “good” is not necessarily the same as the distance between “good” and “fair.”
