The smallest individual element that makes up the sample of participants used in a research study. A cell can also be interpreted as a sub-sample within the total sample. For example, a sample of men and women in two distinct markets could make up four cells of interest within the study: men, market one; men, market two; women, market one; women, market two. Also referred to as “Cell.”
