In media planning and buying, any media inventory that is purchased or sold “automatically” (meaning executed by software algorithms on a transaction platform) based on specific parameters that are pre-designated by the marketer (e.g., price ranges, target audience). Programmatic buying and selling occurs via algorithmically based, real-time bidding. It is not uncommon for the same media publishers to sell inventory both programmatically and non-programmatically.
