Young Pros Spotlight
Daniel Kallista
What is your role / current company?
Manager, Measurement & Insights/NY Times
If you could give one piece of advice to other Young Pros, what would it be?
I once had a manager who stayed remarkably calm during difficult moments. No matter what went wrong or how bad it was, he always remained cool and collected. He was never reactive and never blamed others. His demeanor and approach in these situations was infectious. It stuck with me, and others took cues from him as well. The lesson, he told me before leaving, is that it’s easy to take things too seriously in stressful environments. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is bring the temperature down.
What is your proudest professional achievement?
Having strong relationships with the people I work with.
What is your biggest professional challenge?
Getting people who think of research as added value to understand that its real purpose is to lend credibility.
How has being an ARF Young Pro impacted your career?
Well, I’m just a few weeks in, but I’m mostly looking forward to meeting new people in the space and learning different approaches.
What is one thing you have seen on the internet recently that made you smile? Work-related or otherwise. (PG-13!)
There’s a city in the Czech Republic that has been trying for years to build a dam. It was apparently a headache for everyone involved–the local government, engineers, urban planners, etc. Tons of red tape and bureaucracy. Last week, the city woke up and the dam had been built over night–by a colony of beavers. It saved the city $1.2M.
