Jubelkis Diaz Economics CUNY John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Senior What inspired you to pick your current major?I decided to study economics because growing up, I noticed what occurs in the world almost always comes back to the economy. Whether it was the Russia/Ukraine war taking place on the other side of the world or a politician wanting to make change, the economy would be affected some way. In my first economics course, understanding US economic data, I learned exactly how the COVID-19 pandemic had a direct correlation with the unemployment rate. I knew I was in the right major. How has being in the ARF WIDE Program affected your career path or university studies?Being in the ARF WIDE Program has given me the opportunity to explore different career paths. Although I am not 100% sure what I would like to do as a career or have it all figured out, the ARF WIDE has expanded my knowledge to the point where I was able to narrow it down. Attending the AudiencexScience Event earlier this year was truly exciting and eye-opening, I was able to network and learn exactly how companies use new insights and measurements to see the impact consumer behavior. Tell us about your new position! What is your role and where is it? What will you be doing? My summer internship was in Morgan Stanley as a Virtual Engagement (VEA) Summer Analyst in the Wealth Management division. There was a digital and planning side. Digital was to help financial advisors with their online presence and obtain clients. Planning was to help financial advisors customize their client’s financial plan. I learned and shadowed both, recommended three effective strategies for client outreach for the capstone project, and initiated coaching experiences. If money were no object, what would your dream job be?If money was no object, my dream job would be to become a traveler. I would love to travel the world with all expenses paid for and the only requirement would be to have fun. Where do you see yourself in five to ten years? In five to ten years, I see myself making an impact on the youth. I would love to work with college students and act as a mentor or coach. I truly appreciate when at internships, other employees take a chance on me or the positive impact a mentor has made on my career. That connection is valuable and I want to be able to help as much as possible, to minimize their stress or uncertainty about the future. What is your favorite hobby? Why do you enjoy it?My favorite hobby is trying different foods from different cultures. In NYC, I can try food from almost any different country by going to a restaurant I’ve never been to and eating something I most likely can’t pronounce very well. I always leave with no regrets and plan when I am going to have it again, I enjoy the experience overall. What is something you would tell your younger self?I would tell my younger self that no sacrifice equals no success. Do not sell yourself short when it comes to becoming the best version of yourself. |
