A shot that interrupts the flow of a continuously filmed sequence. It is often, though not always, followed by a cut back to the first shot. Cutaways are used to help an editor extend a scene when working with limited footage. An example would be an action sequence at the beach that “cuts away” in the middle to a shot of flying seagulls.
