Summer Internship Opportunities

Program Description
The Summer Internship Program that has been developed will assign students to one of our senior staff.  All students will work on business projects suitable for a resume summary.

ARF Summer Interns are given a unique opportunity to work very closely with senior staff; something that is not possible in many organizations.  Interns are really able to hone their project management and organizational skills through a wide variety of tasks. 

The ARF is host to many events and interns are often able to attend meetings and events.  Our events are packed with industry leaders, thus creating an excellent networking opportunity for our interns. 

ARF staff will provide overviews of their areas and explain the role and context of student assignments.  Questions and discussion will be encouraged.  Lunchtime presentations will be held to introduce students to different business experiences among ARF staff.

The Summer Internship Program will be a 12-week program, starting on June 2nd and concluding on August 21st.  Summer Interns will be asked to work 20 hours/week and will be compensated at an hourly rate.

We are currently seeking interns for the following departments:

Webcast Program – FILLED

This intern will be responsible for promoting and organizing the ARF Webcast Program.  Webcasts are hour-long virtual “brown bag” meetings.  Their purpose is to educate marketers about recent findings and innovations in market research.  Webcasts are generally hosted by research firms who would like to introduce their knowledge and expertise to the marketing community with the hope of gaining new business.  Webcasts may also be hosted by academics or other researchers who would like to share their research results.  Research firms pay the ARF a sponsorship fee to host Webcasts.  Webcast attendance is free for ARF, ANA and AAAA members.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Accept request for Webcasts and manage the Webcast calendar
  • Ensure Webcast sponsors provide their presentations on time
  • Organize Webcast presentations and facilitate their review by SVP, Research
  • Market the ARF Webcast program to potential sponsors
  • Host Webcast on Webex webinar website
  • As necessary, assist the ARF in other critical functions, including conference and council meeting management

Council Program – FILLED

This intern will be responsible for assisting in coordinating and executing meeting logistics, registration and program marketing for the ARF Council program.  The ARF Councils are the primary vehicle for member involvement in The ARF.  Through regular meetings, they provide members the opportunity to:

  • Learn about advertising research “best practices” and keep up with the latest research findings, methods, and tools.
  • Participate in initiatives and research studies that generate valuable new insights and knowledge as well as advance industry practices.
  • Promote advertising research within the industry. 
  • Shape the discussion around important industry issues by sharing their ideas and voicing their concerns with other industry leaders.

Each council chooses a primary topic to explore and then holds three to five meetings during a 12-month period to answer one of two broad questions about the topic:  “What Do We Know?” or “What’s Next?”

  • “What Do We Know?” focuses the council on assessing the research-based knowledge on a topic and current industry practices.  Academic and Industry experts come to the council to share information and participate in discussion.  These councils serve to promote industry consensus and train the next generation of researchers.  The work product from these councils is generally a review of best practices and the supporting body of research.
  • “What’s Next” focuses the council on pursuing new knowledge on a topic by linking it to primary or secondary research being conducted by a committee of industry leaders.  The council learns about the research findings, provides insight and feedback, and promotes the research to advance industry practices. The work product from these councils may take the form of a research paper, workshop, or white paper. 

In addition, council chairs often convene meetings to discuss “hot topics” emerging during the year, such as Project Apollo and Yahoo! Consumer Direct offline purchase measure.

Council initiatives sometimes grow into ARF research initiatives, white papers or learning sessions/workshops.

Council meetings and involvement are open to all employees of ARF member companies.  We also allow non-members to attend as a one-time sample of this ARF member benefit in order to encourage new members.

Primary Responsibilities:

Manage Registration

  • Monitor councils@thearf.org email inbox: answer queries or forward them to appropriate ARF staff member, process and confirm registrations
  • Manage WebEx registrations: monitor, process and confirm registrations
  • Maintain records of registrants and actual attendees in CRM database
  • Work with member development team to identify non-member registrants/attendees and utilize the council program to acquire new members

Coordinate Meeting Logistics

  • Coordinate with council chairs and speakers to collect presentations and other meeting materials
  • Prepare and produce meeting materials (agendas, attendee lists, nametags, handouts, presentations)
  • Assist in set-up of conference room or meeting room

Assist in Marketing Coordination and Execution

  • Assist in coordinating schedule of communications about meetings to ARF staff, ARF members, council chairs and council meeting registrants
  • Assist in execution of communications about meetings to ARF staff, ARF members, council chairs and council meeting registrants
  • Assist in copywriting, copyediting and production of marketing materials and communications

Primary Benefits:
The Council Program Intern will learn the basics of meeting/event planning and logistics, as well as marketing communications.  This position will offer the opportunity to manage certain aspects of the Council Program, offering the intern the opportunity to hone their project management and organizational skills.  The Council Program will also provide the intern the occasion to learn about important topics and initiatives in the various areas of advertising research through meeting attendance.  Meetings will also provide a great opportunity for networking with others in the industry.

Research – FILLED

We are seeking interns to participate in ground-breaking research initiatives with leading marketing thinkers and researchers from a broad array of companies. Interns will be expected to learn about key issues, methods and insights regarding marketing strategy, advertising and research.

Industrious interns with course work in finance, marketing and/or social science research may join our research team. We are seeking a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week of seriously engaged work.

Interns are urged to define individual learning objectives and to share their learning with other interns and the ARF research staff.

The ARF’s research leadership is a key reason that over 350 companies are members of the ARF. ARF members are roughly equally distributed into advertisers, agencies, media companies, and research firms. They expect high quality research on an ongoing basis. Currently, the majority of ARF research is on the topic of engagement, an emerging construct linking the consumer experience with the brand and the media/marketing context. Dozens of leading marketing, advertising, media and research companies are participating in a three-pronged program led by the ARF.

Primary Responsibilities:

Role of intern is to help contribute to research program by aiding in the collaboration of various volunteer and consortium initiatives, reviewing findings and synthesizing them, conducting secondary research from literature.

Intern will work with Dr. Cook and others on research team, including a globally diverse group of bright, energetic interns, and with industry leaders who participate in ARF initiatives.

Knowledge Solutions – FILLED

This intern will be responsible for working with Knowledge Solutions to create the ARF’s first online knowledge-base.  Knowledge Solutions is the “knowledge management” arm of the ARF. We make sure that the knowledge we generate is: a) relevant to members, b) accessible in that it can be found and easily understood, and c) applicable to member and industry decision-making.

Primary Responsibilities:

Work with Knowledge Solutions to support its new web activities that include our website and a soon to-be-launched social network concerned with online advertising.

Through this effort interns will become familiar with managing knowledge for ARF members and the larger industry, and gain experience collecting and synthesizing literature, events and developments in online advertising research. Interns will have opportunities to produce online video and other multimedia presentations. Additionally, interns will learn about the role of knowledge management to support the needs of a rapidly evolving field and gain practical know-how in putting knowledge management into practice.

Program & Events – FILLED

The ARF executes two significant conferences each year.  The ARF Annual Convention brings more than 2,000 marketing, advertising and research executives together and the Audience Measurement event brings together more than 600 advertising and media executives. 

Join the ARF Event team as a Meetings & Event intern and help the ARF prepare for these major events. This role will provide you with an opportunity to observe large event development and execution and to learn first hand what it takes to put on a first class convention and expo!

In this role, you will work directly on the development and execution of programs that reach thousands of marketers.  You will have the opportunity to attend strategy meetings and program development sessions.  And, you will also work directly on development and execution of the event, and will have a key role in the coordination of sponsorship development efforts. 

Responsibilities:

Pre-event

  • Maintain event information binders and master event program
  • Collate supplier communications
  • Work with Marketing to review and update conference program to insure accuracy of speaker listings
  • Work with Sales Director and Manager of Events on sponsorship tracking and fulfillment

Onsite

  • Greet speakers on site
  • Help to support speaker rehearsal sessions
  • Assist with the registration process
  • Help with Q&A sessions

Post-event

  • Manage speaker thank you process
  • Work with VP Events on supplier wrap up

Marketing

We are seeking an intern to help us promote two important ARF events: The ARF Annual Convention & Expo and The Audience Measurement Symposium.  ARF events unite the brightest thinkers in the adverting and media arenas and provide an invaluable forum for the sharing of knowledge and industry networking.  Both events are viewed as important benefits to belonging to the ARF community.

The intern position is a marketing function: one part market research, one part program coordination/ execution, and one part internal reporting (to ARF management).

The intern will work under the supervision of the ARF’s Marketing Director to assess the landscape of events in the advertising and media space and coordinate the timely execution of approved marketing materials.

He/She will be involved in the development of collateral materials, advertising placement, and electronic communication and work closely with the ARF management to optimize marketing & communication efforts. The Intern will be expected to provide regular progress reports.

This position will offer workplace learning on event branding, marketing strategy, advertising and measurement.

Roy Morgan Info Center

RM Info Center fulfills research requests from members on all aspects of advertising & marketing effectiveness. Topics have included the measurement of all forms of media effectiveness, the more effective length for a TV commercial, advertising wearout, advertising accountability, the importance of the editorial context of an ad, and many others.

The Center uses business databases and research sources, ARF info content, professional contacts, internal documents and print sources to help members with their marketing issues. Members contact us via phone or email and represent a cross-section of the industry with the majority of requests coming in from the advertising and media agencies.

The department supports internal information needs by finding relevant industry statistics, company backgrounds, over-views of industry issues and others.

The department also organizes the historical documents of the ARF’s 80 years of meetings, conferences and plans and creates access to them.

Primary Responsibilities:

The RM Info Center Intern will work with Berte Schachter, the Director and the department’s grad students to help with building an electronic catalog of the foundation’s book collection.      

Currently there are about 3,000–5,000 marketing/advertising books between the library’s collection and those of the staff.  We are interested in creating a master list of all titles with some subject classifications and a field that designates the location of the book within the organization. We may purchase simple catalog software or build a database.  We may do some investigating into trying to determine the best solution.

All books will require some labeling.  There will be physical work involved in moving the books and possibly re-ordering them.    

The intern will create better access to the resources of a advertising/marketing organization and learn what it is like to create an internal database including working with metadata.
